We Eat from the Same Bowl

This illustration is part of my Collective Food Wisdom series, for which I asked people across different languages and cultures to share a nugget of food wisdom or advice they’ve received that they continue to carry with them in their kitchen, garden, or life.

For the 4th of July, this apt wisdom comes from Dan, a farmer, baker, and brewer in the Adirondacks.

What is the most useful piece of food wisdom or advice you have ever received?

Dan: We eat from the same bowl, but with different spoons.

Who gave it to you?

Dan: It came to me one day while gathering old wooden spoons.

How does it show up in your life?

Dan: I think of this phrase often when I hear how divisive our nation has become. While I don't believe we are as divided as some may purport, there are strong cultural identities that as a society we tend to cling to. It is the realization in how we all bleed red when hurt and that we all share the same planet, each bringing our own uniqueness and diversity to a rich and hearty stew. I just love how food metaphors can express themselves in other aspects of life and show us the hidden truths we need to hear.
