Lithuanian Cabbage Rolls: An Illustrated Recipe in Memory of Grandma

Each custom illustrated recipe begins with storytelling. In the questionnaire, I ask about the history of the recipe, where it comes from, when / why you eat it, and any specific memories you have around this dish. The stories people share in this little text field can move me to tears with their beauty.

With Erin’s blessing, I am sharing the story behind her Grandma Wiley’s Golishkeys with you.

“My Grandma Wiley always cooked Golishkeys (Lithuanian cabbage rolls) for every family gathering. Her house always smelled like them from the moment you walked in. She learned how to make them from her mom. She then taught her daughter (my aunt) how to make them and, after my grandma passed away, my aunt taught me. Now, whenever I visit my parents, I make a huge batch for my parents and my dad acts as my assistant. This recipe will be a gift for him, as a memory of his mom.”

"My grandma loved traditional china, like floral tea cups. She always cooked Golishkeys in large casserole dishes - Corningware with the blue flowers on the side.”
