What we need is here | Wendell Berry | Limited Edition

DKK 250.00

This linoleum block had been sitting unfinished in a drawer for almost a year. I started it last September as I walked this network wooden bridges through the reeds of the wetlands near my home. The day I learned of Wendell Berry’s passing, I took the block out and finished carving it. I listened to his poetry as I pulled the first print, my tears nearly dropping on the wet ink.

His words shaped me; they became part of the soil from which all my work grows. I feel grief and awe and gratitude. Mostly, I feel a compulsion to keep his work going.

Through September, I’ll gather orders from folks who would like to purchase this print. In October, I’ll print a limited edition batch for these orders, and to honor his work, I’ll include a hand-written excerpt from Berry’s poem “Wild Geese” from which this piece comes (read the whole poem below).

Details:

  • A3 (297 x 420 mm / 11.7” × 16.5”) linoleum print

  • Hand-printed in dark brown ink on handmade white cotton paper (not the printer paper you see in the photos, which I just grabbed in a ‘use what you have’ moment)

Shipping:

The Wild Geese

Horseback on Sunday morning,

harvest over, we taste persimmon

and wild grape, sharp sweet

of summer's end. In time's maze

over fall fields, we name names

that went west from here, names

that rest on graves. We open

a persimmon seed to find the tree

that stands in promise,

pale, in the seed's marrow.

Geese appear high over us,

pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,

as in love or sleep, holds

them to their way, clear,

in the ancient faith: what we need

is here. And we pray, not

for new earth or heaven, but to be

quiet in heart, and in eye

clear. What we need is here.

– Wendell Berry
